subject: The Importance Of Printers And Ink Cartridges In Everyday Life And For The Environment [print this page]

In our world where technology is moving so quickly, it can be quite easy to forget that there are generations before us that never had the opportunity of benefitting from all the tools that we now find ourselves so attached to.

Thanks to the advent of the computer, we can now benefit from a more productive and efficient work day and while many of us realize just how crucial a computer can be to our home or office, we often neglect to upkeep and maintain our expensive printer and our equally expensive printer supplies.

How many times have you printed a document without realizing just how amazing the technology behind the concept - from computer to printer to ink cartridge to paper actually is? Have you ever asked yourself just how our grandparents and, in some cases, our own parents actually ever got any work done? It is truly miraculous that you can instantly have access to data that you have just typed up - by simply clicking on a few buttons.

This means that while the computer is, of course, an integral part of any home or work environment, you should also put equal consideration and thought into choosing the correct printer and ink cartridges. There have been many rumblings over the last few years, especially when it comes to choosing and purchasing ink cartridges. Unfortunately, while the prices of printers have steadily gone down, the price of good quality ink cartridges has not - and this has proven to be a problem for many users and while manufacturers are fully aware of the situation, they do not appear to be all that interested in creating ink cartridges that are high quality and affordable. Because of this, many people find that it is cheaper to buy a new printer every time the complimentary ink runs out compared to buying a new ink cartridge.

What this means is that we need to be cautious and selective when using our printers. Yes, there is no question that owning a printer is critical - however, using properly is another matter entirely.

Firstly, always ask yourself 'do I really need to print this?' By asking this important question, you are doing your little bit for the environment (although, certainly you can always do more) and in many cases, you will come to see that you don't really need to actually print the document at all.

Secondly, always make sure that you maintain your printer. Make sure that you use high quality ink cartridges when you require top performance printing. For daily 'draft' printing, you may consider using a lower quality ink cartridge or ink refills (which are also excellent choices when it comes to protecting the environment).

We live in a time and place where instant access has become the norm - however, we need to stop for a moment and just remember that owning these working tools is a privilege - and we need to act responsibly when using them.
