subject: Small Dog Houses For Small Canine Friends [print this page]

Smaller dogs are highly popular these daysSmaller dogs are highly popular these days. Almost every female celebrity has one on her arms any given day, and whether it is a Chihuahua, an Australian terrier or an American cocker spaniel, it shares the basic needs of every human on Earth. To cater to their need for a living space of their own, small dog houses are the best option.

Although a larger dog house seems to be good enough for smaller dogs, it is not. Smaller dogs should have smaller houses. It might be comfortable to have all the room needed to move, play and lie around, but the entire structure can prove to be not only intimating but actually scary for these little ones.

Probably the best option in finding a dog house that fits a small dog is to make one. It is actually not a hard thing to do as long as one knows how to drive a nail into a piece of wood, then everything is going to be fine starting there.

To start off, there should be a plan. This incorporates the design for the dog house, which also serves as the basis for other details such as the dimensions of the house and the materials needed to set it up. It is recommended that the dog house's base should be off the ground especially in areas where the weather can get really bad.

For the base of the dog house, 4X4s are laid out edgewise to end up with a floor that is around four inches away from the ground. This allows enough airspace beneath the house. A piece of plywood is then laid over the floor of 4X4s.

The house is then framed with the use of 2X2s or 4X4s. To make the roof end up in a sloping form toward the front part of the house, the back wall should be made at least four inches taller than the front wall. This makes it easy for the rain and snow to run off the roof. The entry way should also be framed with 2X2s, and one should make sure that there is ample space between the end of the entry and the back of the dog house for convenient and easy movement of the dog.

Plywood walls are then attached to the outside if the frames and cut the side pieces based on the slope for the house's roof. When attaching the plywood to the frame, it is most preferable to use wood screws to secure the walls in place. One can also have some space on the wall for some insulation in colder places.

Its roof is going to be a piece of plywood. For easy cleaning later on, it can be attached with hinges in the back. One can just lift the roof and clean the entire house fast and easy. One can then paint the exposed parts of the roof to protect them from the different elements. A piece of tar paper over the roof can do well in protecting the house and its resident from harsh weather.

Just because one's dog is small, it can be given any kennel to live in. Small dog houses are best to fully accommodate the needs of these smaller breeds of canine buddies.
