Davies triumphs and breaks own record

Laura Davies won the Open de Espana to secure her 77th career title, and broke her own record in the process.

Davies finished 11-under par to seal a two-stroke victory and, at 46 years, 11 months and 14 days, became the oldest winner in Ladies European Tour history (Callaway Diablo Forged Irons).

And the four-time Major champion is on course to top the European money list for an eighth time.

It was not all plain sailing in the final round, as she carded a quadruple bogey eight at the 13th which left her tied for the lead with compatriot Lisa Hall on ten-under.

But she responded (Mizuno JPX AD Irons) with back-to-back birdies while Hall fell away after a double-bogey on the 16th.

"I thought I'd blown it, because last week I had the triple bogey on number 11 and I did blow it, so it works on your mind a bit," admitted Surrey-born Davies.

"It was nice to come straight back with those two birdies. It saved the day, I think."

It was Davies' 43rd European tour victory and she also has 20 wins on the LPGA Tour in America and 14 on other tours around the world.

Final Leaderboard:

-11L Davies (Eng)

-9C Kim (US), R Hudson (Eng), F Bondad (Aus)

-8F Parker (Eng), M Hernandez (Spa), R Hakkarinen (Fin), L Hall (Eng)
