First, we must consider the quantity of resumes landing on an employer's desk each day. Employers state that they receive dozens, or even hundreds, of resumes each and every day. Good grief! How do they ever get anything done with that many resumes to read?
The answer to that question is simple. They don't actually read each resume from top to bottom. Instead, employers skim over our resumes looking for reasons to disqualify us or reasons to consider our resume is worth a few minutes of their time.
Here are three ways you can make a great impression in the few seconds the employer is likely to spend on your resume.
1. Grab their attention with your resume objective statement. How do we do that? Well, you need to keep your objective short and focused. You definitely do not want to say something like "Looking for any kind of job. Willing to do anything" or "To gain employment at a stable company where I can be rewarded for hard work". You see, those things may sound good to you or I but to an employer that is simply not what they are looking for.
2. Focus on your accomplishments. You need to make your major accomplishments very clear. Let the employer know that you filled in for the office manager in their absence. Let them know you presented an idea that saved a previous employer $11,000 over the course of a year. I can't emphasize the importance of this enough. Let them know what you have done for other employers and they will start thinking about what you might be able to do for them as well.
3. Match and map your skills to their requirements. Ideally, you will actually have the exact skills the employer is looking for. However, let's face it, you and I both know this is often not the case. So, what I have done successfully in the past is to simply map my skills to their needs. For example, if they say they are looking for skill x, I mention that I have skills y and z and can apply my knowledge of those to quickly master skill x.
