Mother and father went to visit my aunt's family and they left me at home. After my favorite TV program finished, I went to bed and had a good sleep.

A fit of noises interrupted my sweet dream. I opened my eyes and blamed, "What business are you in, mum. It is already deep at night." It seemed that the noises stopped for a while. Then I moved over and went on sleeping. But once again I was awakened by the continuous noises. I sat up and cried, "Mum!" And the noises stopped again. Then I realized that my parents were absent and there was only myself at home. Once I got the point, I was immediately sober. Ghost was the first idea that came into my mind. I trembled and kept silent, daring not to make any sound. Then I hid my head inside the quilt. But curiosity drove me to make it clear so that I reached out my head again, breathlessly listening to the sound.

For quite a while, the house was in quiet. Then I believed the noises should be made by timid mice. So I became courageous. But still I dared not to make any sound. Then the noises sounded again. I stealthily stood on the bed, walked to the door and saw into the living room through the window. Upon seeing a shadowy shape waved in the room, my hair rapidly stood up on my head. What would that be if it was not a ghost? I closed my eyes tightly and felt that I was about to faint. But my mother had told me that there was not any ghost in this world, so I opened my eyes again. There the shape was searching for something in a drawer. Ghost would not be interested in something in the drawer. Thief! I immediately realized that a thief was in the living room.

I looked around. There was a water tap with a grip which I just bought lying on the windowsill. I ran to it and held the grip in my hand. It was the only weapon I could find. At railway speed, I opened the door and jumped out, crying, "Stop!" The unexpected cry shocked the thief and made him a jump. Then I heard the sounds of bangs caused by things hitting on the ground. All the objects he prepared to steal fell and scattered everywhere. Then I realized that the thief was only a coward who was scared by me than I was by him. So I bravely ran to him and he rapidly ran to the main door. Holding the water tap, I fought him with my full strength.

Quite out of my expectation, when the thief knew that it was impossible for him to run out, he fell on his knees and cried with tears and snot. Then I stopped and switched on the light. I saw a young man in front of me. He said, "Give me a chance. Please do not send me into prison. I was laid off and my life is really difficult now. I have a wife and a child. All of them need money." I thought for a while. I considered the thief was not that bad because he did not carry a weapon at all. So I said, "Give me a promise that you will not steal again. Then I will let you go." The thief made a promise and I let him go.

Thanks giving to that water grip which gave me courage. I was very proud that I had conquered my terror. I did not know whether or not it was right that I let the thief go. And I hoped he would really not steal again.
