Echoes Upon the Plain

By Michael R. Sears Copyright 2008

I hear echoes in the distance,

Across cracking flat earth,

Like drums from ancient tribes,

Before buffalos quit giving birth,

When the laws of nature were heeded,

When men took only what was needed.

Biplanes replaced the bees, wasp, and praying mantis,

To spread their death giving pollen of chemicals,

To the flowering food of man,

Upon the stolen land.

The poison waters crept underground, secretly, it seemed,

Then came noisome pestilence, swirling,

Like the iron horse smoke rising,

Becoming twisters born upon the plain

That looked, at first, like cornucopia,

But were fire and smoke, blood and pain.

Then man took the seed of the land,

And twisted its creation blend to bland,

Their hand to lend science upon the germ,

of creation's sperm, never to rise again

and bloom with flowers that hear nature's refrain,

The hand of man has now changed the sand

that once flowed through the hour glass

Now stained is that bloom. Now tainted is that fruit,

Never more to rise as men still devise their plots.

Once, upon their beaver ponds,

the stars and moon were multiplied,

the sun was doubled to warm,

pure game with pure water flowed,

as soothingwind whispered through pine needles.

Have you ever heard it?

In the distant haze of time that comes,

Loom giant silo drums,

Rusting, in rows, beside empty tracks & trains,

Void of all their grains, repeating their refrains,

In the unrelenting wind that blows with no rains,

I realize,

It is the echoes of ancient warriors, wind warriors,

beating the hollow silo drums, again and again and again,

Proclaiming victory and defeat
