subject: Nursing Study - Courses To Consider Before Studying Nursing [print this page]

Potential nurses should find a favorable job market for many years to come because of a shortage of qualified nurses. Before becoming a CNA, LPN, or RN, there are some courses that prospective students might want to take to be able to jump-start their career in nursing.

Those who would like to become a CNA will not have to fulfill any prerequisite courses in order to get into a CNA training program. They only need to meet the age requirement of 16 years old and they must possess a high school diploma or GED. However, they may find it useful to take courses such as medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.

LPNs, on the other hand, will have to meet more requirements before they start their formal training in licensed practical nursing. One of the main requirements for the LPN program is to have a high school diploma or a GED. They may also need to pass a competency test and to complete their CPR certification before starting in the program. Coursework on mathematics and English will also be beneficial to LPN students.

Students who want to go into the registered nursing program have more educational requirements and prerequisites to complete. Prospective students must first possess a high school diploma or GED. In most colleges and universities, students are required to take and pass a TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) test with a grade of 67% or better. A TEAS test is divided into four sections: Math, Science, English, Reading, and Language. Most RN programs require prerequisites such as microbiology, anatomy, physiology, English, and math. Prerequisites must be completed with a satisfactory grade prior to applying.
