For applying to a scholarship the student has to prove the fact that he needs the money or that he is really good at what he is doing. Furthermore, some colleges or universities don't give a scholarship to the students that live near the college. The reason to that is the fact that students can benefit from homing and financial support from their families. If this is the case, the economical situation of the family is carefully analyzed.

The scholarship recipients have to comply with the terms and policies of the organization or educational institution that they receive the scholarship from. One of the most important terms is that the student has to keep his scores up to still receive the scholarship. If this does not occur, the student loses the scholarship even if he had excellent results at first.

Scholarship students can by of any race, gender or religion and can be a minority. In fact, there are special scholarships granted to these types of students, and these are called student-special scholarships.

Other such scholarships are granted to students that have excellent results in athletics or in forging languages but also in native language poetry. Some universities even provide scholarships for students from other countries in order to increase the student number, but also students can come as the result of two universities working together.
