subject: Fall Picnic Fun – A Twist on Traditional Picnic Games [print this page] Fall is that time of year when getting out and soaking up the last warm days is a must. Tailgating abounds, camping, hiking and picnicking excursions are at a premium (not to hot, not to cold), and getting outside is just plainfun! And in keeping with that idea of "fun" outdoor activities, we came up with a new twist on picnicking that is appropriate for the season of warm days and cool nights.
We call it the MUST have picnic game idea it's called "Competitive Picnicking."
Here's how it works.
First of all you need several teams of 5 people. This would be great for a party or family reunion type of setting.
Basically, players trade food and drinks to assemble the tastiest (high scoring) lunch. The game works like gold fish and players bring the ingredients to assemble the lunch. The type of food, since it's seasonal, would be foods and drinks that are appropriate for fall. Hearty soups or chili, anything made with apples, pumpkins or squash, drinks like hot cocoa, spiced apple cider and such. The list of appropriate foods would need to be passed out prior to the game and each and each team needs to select one drink, one dessert, one main course, one snack to bring all secretly hidden away in picnic baskets or totes.
Each team has a picnic blanket that is their home base. You'll need a large area where the blankets can be laid out in a hexagonal grid. Players get a card that has a point value for each food item. This would need to be figured out ahead of time by the host of the event.
There are four rounds that correspond to the themed items (drinks, snacks, main course, desserts). In the frist two rounds a team gets 5 chances to ask (like in Go Fish) the team whose blanket borders theirs for a specific food item. In the drink round, they might ask for spiced cider, for example. If the team asked has it, they must surrender it.
Each team continues through the first two rounds of drinks and snacks. From there, they move into the main round where they can ask for the main course and dessert until one team has collected all the high point items with a 20 minute time frame.
Once the time is up, the scores are tallied and a winner is selected.
At the end of the game, everyone eats what they've collected on their blankets!
