subject: WALK across the BAY at Grange-over-sands (just South of the UK Lake District National Park) [print this page]

This summer we did the cross-bay walk starting at Arnside (which is under an hour away by car from our lodge). It is an organised walk which is arranged by Galloways Society for the Blind, you can register and give a donation on the day, or pre-register via their website.

Initially the walk goes out a long way into the bay and it seems like you are heading out to sea! The direction is almost in completely the opposite direction to where the walk ends at Kents Bank, near Grange-over-Sands. Instead of going straight across in a straight line your guide takes you on a safe route which is anything but straight.

Our guide was Cedric Robinson MBE, is in his 70s, and is the Queen's Guide to the Sands with over 40 years experience. The walk took us just under 4 hours, and is a steady walk, flat and easy on the feet, during our walk there were some young people (including babes in arms) and a few much older (70+ years old). If you get too tired to walk the whole distance then there is a tractor-and-trailer which follows the walkers from about half-way which will give you a lift to the end.

In some parts the water does get a little deep and it can be muddy! Ensure you take old shoes and be prepared to get wet. If you would like to go on a walk across the bay and you need somewhere to stay then our lodge is under an hour away situated between Windermere and Ambleside.
