subject: New Kinds Of Interior Design [print this page]

Ever wondered what the heck "new interior design" is? I'm here to answer this question. You see, just like most "new" things, its really just an update, an improvement. The "new" thing is almost never something radically different. Its most of the old with some new elements. And in essence, every new trend, every new movement is just reactionary to the one that preceded it. In essence, every new phase tries to "correct" the mistakes of the previous phase or trend.

These vague statements I just made also apply to interior design. It follows these rules and is always adapting. Right now, what interior design is, the "new thing" is simplifying. The problem everyone finds with the "old" is that designs (and lifestyles) were too complex and elaborate. The new design is about making simplistic, naturalistic designs.

The trick is that creating simple designs is actually no easy. Its simple for you, the end-user if you will, but actually creating something simple and yet functional and usable, is not an easy task. That's why finding a designer who'll be able to do that is not easy. A lot of designers are setting new guidelines to achieve this. For example when it comes to furniture, they try to stick to simple wood. When it comes to colors, they stick to simple naturalistic colors that are light. The materials are as natural and simple as can get.

I don't think I have to convince you of the benefits of nature too much. Just take a stroll on a river-walk or through the park, and tell me how do you feel? Is it better than in a nightclub? Well, a lot of design until recently was to make homes like nightclubs. Which is great for guests, but not to kick back and relax. The good news is that designers have figured out ways of capturing some of the benefits of nature and being outside while being at home.

One of the major ways to accomplish a naturalistic feel at home... is the clever use of space. This is why designers who focus on this new trend tend to be minimalistic. They go out of their way to make sure you have the least pieces of furniture, the most apart that they can be. This creates a feeling of "space" and naturally relaxes you.

I mean its very easy to see how this makes a difference. Go to a small town mall where everything is cramped together. Next, go to a big city mall where there's literally 3-4-5 times as much distance between store entrances, stairs and from end to end. You'll notice how much more relaxed you feel in the more spacious mall.
