subject: Development of Nutrient Specific Ready to Reconstitute Enteral Feeds [print this page] The field of specialized nutritional support needs to be evolved in our country. Most of the feeds available are either in extract form (restore formula for diabetes or protein, energy and micronutrient supplements) or household preparations which are proved to be unable to fulfill the nutritional requirements of the patient.
This calls for the formulation of disease specific or standard enteral feeds based on natural food sources. The purpose of the present study is to develop some processing techniques of preparing ready to reconstitute enteral formula feeds based on wholesome foods like cereals, pulses vegetables and nuts. Under this study selected food were analyzed for their nutritional composition and were processed accordingly. Three enteral formula feeds were developed as energy rich, protein rich and micronutrient rich. The nutritional values of developed formula feeds and cost were calculated. Recommended dietary guidelines given by National institute of nutrition, Hyderabad, serves as guideline for estimating the total nutritional requirement of a reference indian man. The physio chemical characteristics of the developed feeds like flowing attributes, total % solids and reconstitution time were also estimated.
The finding of the study indicates that all the developed formulas feeds can provide a better solution to the problem of home made tube feeds. The nutrient specific composition of three feeds will help in recovery of the patients from various diseases. These formula can be suitable in disease like cancer, neck or chest surgery, burn GIT infection, severe neuromuscular disorder. These would provide the wholesome nutrition equal to the natural balanced diet and provide nutrition support at affordable cost to a wide range of patients.
