Gang Green has made several last-minute moves heading into the 2010 NFL regular season, and here are some of the top storylines coming out of New Meadowlands Stadium in the last week of August.
Calvin Pace is out, Adalius Thomas might be in. Big news in New York is that outside linebacker Calvin Pace will miss a large chunk of the season as he undergoes surgery on a broken foot he suffered in the Jets' preseason game against the Washington Redskins. Pace's expected recovery time is four to six weeks, leaving Jason Taylor, Vernon Gholston and Jamaal Westerman to fill the gap he leaves in the lineup.
While the Jets have some solid backups for Pace while he's out, rumor has it the team is looking at signing free agent linebacker Adalius Thomas in his place. Thomas, who was released right before the draft by the New England Patriots due to a lackluster season in '09, reportedly has interest in the Jets as well. He recently told Sports Illustrated, "I don't know if teams are scared off about me now or if I've been blackballed. I do think there are teams out there I'd be a good fit for - the Jets especially."
Laveranues Coles released, perhaps retired. The Jets released veteran wide receiver Laveranues Coles following their preseason game against the Washington Redskins, perhaps marking the end of the 32-year-old receiver's football career. Coles was slated to earn a base salary of $855,000 this season, but he still has a chance at collecting some cash if he's re-signed by the Jets after Week 1 of the regular season. A possible re-signing under a game-to-game basis looks like it's in the cards for the near future if Coles wants it, but the aging receiver might opt to retire instead.
Coles spoke with The Star-Ledger of Newark following his release from the Jets, saying, "I think I'm done. I don't want to become one of those journeymen football players. I don't need the money. [Rex Ryan] said I was doing well and they want to bring me back after the first game, but I don't know. I don't think that's something I want to do." Coles has repeatedly said he will retire after his current tenure with the Jets is over, and that could now be sooner than previously expected for the 10-year veteran.
Mark Sanchez sports a fashion statement. Mark Sanchez got nailed by Washington Redskins defensive end Kedric Golston in the Jets-Skins preseason game, and the week before that he had a close call with his weak knee against the Carolina Panthers. Sanchez is a player who sells tons of New York Jets tickets, and as head signal-caller it's crucial to keep him upright. All this getting knocked around has recently left the quarterback with the decision to wear a protective knee brace in every game, regardless of injury.
This past February, Sanchez had surgery to repair the patella-stabilizing ligament in his left knee. Though he's back on the field already, the second-year quarterback isn't about to put himself at risk for re-injuring the knee. Claiming the brace is simply a precautionary measure, Sanchez told The Canadian Press, "It's just a matter of getting used to it again. I wore it growing up, I've worn it in school (and) all last year. It's really not that bad. It's really not that bad. It's more of a mental thing. I just don't like wearing it."
