subject: Surviving A Harsh Famine [print this page]

Famines result from a variety of different disasters. These disasters may be man-made or natural, but either way they have the same consequence.

Even though most Americans enjoy the luxury of access to enough food, this may not always be the case. Many people are realizing that there may not always be someone to help when disaster strikes.

You may be on your own. As a result, it is important that you prepare yourself and your family to survive on their own.

One of the first things you should gather is a plentiful food storage. You will want to gather enough for your family and possibly a few friends.

Keep in mind that if most of the world is starving and your family is not, other people will know and they will try to take your food from you. You will also need a means to protecting your food supply and your family.

Today, one of the best options for food storage is freeze dried food. It is very light and easy to store.

It is also very easy to prepare as most varieties only need hot water to reconstitute. In addition, freeze dried food packages come in complete meals that are full of the nutrients that your body needs.

There are also many different meals to choose from. Even the pickiest eaters will be able to find food they will like.

In the past, these reconstituted foods were quite nasty. They had a bad texture, they smelled disgusting and they looked positively revolting.

However, improvements have been consistently made until the freeze dried food when reconstituted tastes, looks, and smells like normal, edible food. However, there are also other alternatives when it comes to food storage.

Canned food has been a very popular form of food storage because it stacks well. It also used to be the most reliable way of storing food so that it would last for a very long time.

However, canned food often takes more preparation and needs complimentary foods, such as spices to taste excellent. In addition, it is very heavy and difficult to move if the need arises.

MRE's have also been used by some families as they provide a lot of nutrients and calories in a prepackaged dinner. However, these are a fairly expensive option.

There are other methods of food storage as well, but these are the most popular. If you can it is best to store what you family will need to survive on for six months.

In addition to food, you will not want to forget to store water. If food is not available then it is very likely that water will not be either.

The general rule for how much water you should store is one gallon per person per day. This is a lot of water, but it will cover your cooking, drinking, and hygienic needs.

You will also need it if you do purchase freeze dried food as that is how you prepare it. Keep in mind that a human can survive without food up to three weeks.

However, a human can only survive about three days without water. Water makes up a larger percentage of the body and it cannot survive without it.

In addition to food storage, you will want to have a means to permanently solving the problem if the problem lasts longer than your food storage. The best solution to the problem is to grow your own food.

However, you must have the seeds to do it if you are going to fall back on this option. Make sure that you do some research to find out which kinds of seeds grow the best in harsh conditions with little water and poor soil.

Store these hardy seeds with your food storage. Make sure you have enough seeds to support your family for several years.

Even though you have the seeds, remember that growing food will not be easy. If growing food was easy, then there would not be a shortage.

It is a very good idea to practice growing these crops several times before you have to do it in harsh conditions. Learn as much as you can about them.

You may even want to store some bags of fertilizer and extra water for the crops. Of course, most people do not have room for this kind of preparation.

However, it could save the lives of your family members. Becoming prepared is critical to surviving a harsh famine.
