subject: Are Healthy Donuts Just A Pipedream? [print this page]

When we think of donuts, the last thing we think of is a healthy food option. Although there are not necessarily any healthy donuts, some are not nearly as bad as others. For example, baked donuts are drastically less fattening than fried donuts.

Apple cider donuts, for instance, are not nearly as bad as glazed or other sugar filled donuts. In fact, apple cider donuts can be purchased or made without adding sugar on top. This clearly is a healthier choice than a chocolate covered donut or sugar topped ball of fried flour. When possible, it is also helpful to opt for whole wheat donuts and donuts that use fresh, all-natural ingredients. Make sure to also ensure that any donut you choose is trans fat to make a simple healthy choice.

Apple cider donuts, however, are not nearly as prevalently found as their more sugary fat filled competitors. Although they can be found in many gourmet bread or donut shops, many people do not have access to these shops. A worthy option is purchasing donuts or donut mixes online. By purchasing a donut mix online, you have even greater control over how much sugar is going into your donut.

Purchasing homemade donuts or donut mixes is also much better than purchasing donuts at the supermarket. Boxed donuts and donut holes prevalently found at the supermarket are packed full of artificial sweeteners and preservatives, which are not good for those looking to live a more natural, healthier lifestyle. By purchasing donuts from a donut store that freshly bakes their donuts every morning, or from an online supplier, you will likely drastically cut back on artificial sweeteners, colors, or preservatives. Again, this can aid in living a healthier lifestyle, even while eating a donut.

As the old adage goes, we have to do and eat everything in moderation. Donuts are a family favorite and are commonly found in the diets of many Americans. Donuts are okay to eat in moderation. However, by choosing healthier options, you can drastically cut back on the calories and fat consumed. Most importantly, if you can find homemade donuts, or make your own from prepackaged mixes, you can be assured that you are enjoying a healthier option than those sugary donuts commonly found at the supermarket.

Healthy donuts may not exist, but some are drastically less unhealthy than others. Now the real question remains: Can you turn your back on your favorite fried glazed donut?
