Keeping your carpet clean and looking fresh can be a real hassle when you have lots of foot traffic or animals running around the house but it is possible to keep looking good as new with a little carpet cleaning maintenance.

You can find a good carpet cleaner solution at your local department store. There are various companies that manufacture good carpet cleaning solutions. However, if you do not want to spend time and money looking for ready made company-manufactured products, you can always make your carpet cleaning solutions yourself, using household substances and some household chemicals that are extremely simple to find.

There are various ways you can make your own carpet cleaner solution.

- Vinegar - Mix one part vinegar to ten parts water. This will get rid of spots quickly. The smell of vinegar will wear off when the carpet dries.

- Ammonia - you can use this in the same amount of carpet cleaner solution that your particular steamer asks for. They have it in different scents but you will probably still need to leave your windows open until the carpet dries as the scent won't go away until they are dry.

- Windex and Water - For this cleaner use equal amounts of Windex and hot water in your steam cleaner.

- Dish washing liquid, Ammonia and Water - use around 3 teaspoons of dish washing liquid with cups of ammonia and vinegar to a couple gallons of water.

- OxiClean, Vinegar and Warm Water - use 1 scoop of oxiclean, 1 cup of vinegar, and a desired amount of warm water. This is great for getting rid of pet odors and the vinegar smell if notice will subside once the carpet is dry. This can also be used on couches if you have extensions for your cleaner.

- Tide Laundry soap and Water - this can be used instead of carpet shampoo, it doesn't foam so there is no need for de-former which will cuts cost extensively.

- OxiClean and Hot Water - this eliminates both stains and odor and there is no lingering odor while you wait for your floor to dry as with the homemade cleaner solutions that sometimes contain vinegar and ammonia.

- Water - you can put 100% pure water into your steam cleaner and it will work just great.

These homemade carpet cleaning solutions are a less expensive alternative compared to chemical-based or ready-made carpet cleaning solutions for cleaning your carpets, working just as effective. A homemade carpet cleaning solution is safer to the environment.
