subject: Biblical Prophecies Of Jesus Christ And His Mission Of Salvation [print this page] Christians believe that the messianic mission of Jesus Christ is the single greatest event of the world. In fact, they believe that the entire existence of mans eternal life rested in the hands of Christ and his mission. If he had not atoned for the sins of mankind, then all of mankind would have been doomed to be angels to the devil. Therefore all of Gods prophets have foretold of Christs mission and what he would do for mankind. In fact, some of the Old Testament lives are examples or types of what Jesus Christ would fulfill.
Some Old Testament prophecies and types are detailed below. They are further examples of the messianic mission of Jesus Christ.
The sacrifices that the Jewish nation was a type of the sacrifice that Christ would fulfill. The lamb had to be without blemish and be the firstborn. The belief was that the sins of the petitioner would be symbolically placed on the sacrificial lamb. This is an indication of the mission of Jesus Christ. He placed his sins upon himself and atoned for each and every one of them.
The passover which occurred initially with the exodus out of Egypt was also a type of the mission of Christ. The Israelites placed blood of a firstborn lamb upon their doorway. The angel of death passed over their houses. Jesus Christ fulfilled his mission during the passover which was symbolic of his mission.
The prophet Isaiah foretold many of the events of Christs life. In Isaiah 7:14 he details about how Christ would be born of a virgin and would be called Immanuel, which means God with us. In Isaiah 9:6,7 he states that a son would born and the government would be on his shoulders. He would be called wonderful, counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
In Isaiah 35:4,6 he states the Christ would perform many miracles. The eyes of the blind would be open and the ears of the deaf unstopped. The lame would leap like a deer and the mute tongue shout for joy. All of these prophecies could be interpreted as literal transformations but they also could refer to symbolic events when the people who hear the gospel would be saved from their sins.
Isaiah 49:6 talks about Christ restoring the tribe of Jacob and bringing back the Israelites. He also refers to Christ being a light to the Gentiles and salvation would be brought to the ends of the earth. Some religions have the belief that the salvation would be brought to the ends of the earth by the Gentiles.
Isaiah also foretold that Christ would be buried in a rich mans tomb and that he would be numbered with the transgressors. Christ would also be a descendant of King David. All of these prophecies were fulfilled with the death of Christ. The prophet Zechariah prophesied that Christ would enter Jerusalem on a donkey and also told of the crucifixion of Christ. He stated that "they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child and grieve for him as one grieves for a firstborn son"
