subject: What To Wear To A Job Interview For Men [print this page]

Finding a job is something that can prove to be quite a nasty experience even if we didn't have to think about what we should wear. However, it is one of the main elements of leaving a good first, second and last impressions. It is very important to know what to put on if you are going to a job interview, but what is most important is to know your country's and the company's own preferences. Some countries have unwritten rules and their entire business wear is always according to these rules. However, what should you do if you are not certain what is allowed and what not? Of course, the most secure thing to do is to put on a pair of black pants, black necktie and a light dress shirt and go on like this. You can always loose the tie a bit according to the interviewer. However, you might end-up in a sticky situation where your instinct has been proven wrong and be the only one without a bow tie in the room. This interview would be lost forever.

First of all, you should consider the job you're applying for. Is it in an IT department in a big firm or in a game-developing company with a team of 5? There is an obvious difference between the two, even if you are applying for almost the same position. You should think about the company's name and what it does. Then you can chose between a suit with a tie or a pair of jeans. Most companies, however, even if they are small prefer to hire people with style and who looks rather introverted. This is why in most countries you would always feel at an advantage with pants, shirt and a simple tie. The ties should never be too noticeable, as well as the shirt itself. Choose your attire in the basic colours (blacks, grays, and blues). The tie can be anything that goes well with these, but with minimal or even better- no patterns at all. DO not dress brightly. Attracting too much attention might be a good thing in one situation, but in another you can be taken for a negatively charged particle and be thrown away without even having a chance to say your stuff. Just like with the animals and birds - colour is good, but after you have proven to be the pack's leader.

Another important thing is the props. No, we are not necessarily talking about something illegal. Every job has its props. It can be the suitcase that every banker has, the case where the photographer's portfolio is, the cover of the notebook every CEO needs. You should consider bringing one of these along, but it not what is inside that is important. The cover, case, file or suitcase should be polished, expensive-looking and/or arty depending on the job you are applying for. It created an impression of security, care for the work you do and respect. Your own accessories should also be polished and cleaned. If you wear a wristwatch, please, don't let it halt; if you wear a scarf, check if it's not spotted and so on.

As a whole, what to wear to a job interview is a mind game. You should consider the human factor and most of all the mind of the one who would be interviewing you. If you manage to become a psychologist just for this once, you will be on the winning side at the end of the day.
