subject: Dog Beds [print this page]

At the end of a long day, everyone likes to get into their own bed and feel comfortable. Its a personal space that is arranged as individuals see fit and where total relaxation can occur. Its exactly the same for a dog. For dog owners theres nothing better than seeing your dog climb onto its bed and fall fast asleep. It warms the heart and always raises a smile.

Gone is the practice of putting a dog out for the night as pets are treated increasingly like one of the family and welcomed inside. While some working dogs do live in dog cages outside, it is important to make the family pet dog comfortable and wanted. Providing a dog bed is exactly the way to do this, as the animal will have some place to call home.

The amount of dog beds available is astonishing. Theres everything from plastic dog beds to wicker ones, bean bags, mats and even dog crates. They are available in all colours of the rainbow and in a plethora of designs and sizes. While some owners insist on buying gemstone encrusted pillows and baskets made of the highest quality wood, the dog wont care about any of it. As long as the bed is comfortable, warm and has the dogs scent is all that matters.

But why should an owner spend money on a bed when the floor is just as good? Well, dogs have very sensitive joints and bones at the best of times so lying on the floor for long periods, such as overnight, can cause a lot of pain. Think about it this way- would you sleep on a bed without a mattress? The answer is highly unlikely because it would be uncomfortable. The same goes with dogs. Providing somewhere comfortable for them to sleep is a big help in keeping pressure off joints and minimising pain. So this means buying a bed and a blanket or pillow to go in it!

Obviously when going out to buy a dog bed, the size of the dog is the most important aspect to consider. Its no good buying a small bed for a big dog and vice versa. While buying the cheapest one possible is tempting, you should keep in mind cheap doesnt always mean good. Different designs do vary in price, for example plastic dog beds are considerably cheaper than wicker ones. Bean bags are also a very affordable option. While you can pick up some good items from regular furniture stores, when it comes to the essentials its always better to go to a pet shop.

Keeping your dog fit and healthy is a priority. It all starts with making sure the animal has a comfortable place to sleep that doesnt put pressure on joints or bones. Allowing a dog to relax in its own space is important, and will lead to a good natured animal. Dog beds then make for happy dogs, which in turn makes for happy owners!
