subject: Extending Your Range Using Basketball Shooting Drills [print this page]

Basketball shooting drills are your only ticket to perfecting your shot and increase your field goal percentages. By becoming an accurate shooter, you become an asset to your team. Just make sure you also perform ball handling workouts to build your fundamentals.

Being able to score baskets will be easier the nearer you are to the hoop. Its simple physics. However, the opponent will not give you this opportunity freely and you will either need to get past their defence or make the shot from a safe distance. That is why basketball shooting drills that extends your range can help you become more valuable to your team.

To help you find out how you can extend your range, use these basketball shooting drills.

The first one is to help you appreciate jump shots from within the arc. You can do this with a partner or you can just do it alone. Lets say you have someone with you for this exercise. Begin the drill with one player (shooter) 15 feet away from the basket while the other player is the rebounder who stands beneath the hoop.

The drill starts when the rebounder passes the ball to the shooter, who quickly catches the ball and shoots it. The shooter then runs to get the rebound and passes it to his partner who should be setting up on the 15 feet mark. The both of you will keep doing this cycle until both of you get combined five successful shots.

By this time, move up towards the three-point line. Perform the same cycle of shooting, getting your own rebound, and passing it to your partner. After making five successful shots together, move a step further from the three-point line. Repeat the process. When you are done, move back to the three-point line, repeat the same drill, until you end up back to the 15 feet mark and finish it with one more round of the drill.

This is one of the effective basketball drills to help you increase your range. The moment both you and your partner get back to shooting at the 15 feet mark, you will both feel that they seem like easier shots to make. You should also make sure you maintain your shooting forms regardless of the distance you are shooting from.

Another one of the effective basketball drills to help you increase your range is the side step three-point drill. You will need to start at the top of the key and do sidesteps all the way down to the baseline. When you get to the end, sidestep back to where you started all the way to the opposite baseline.

Have a partner pass balls at you as you do this and shoot the ball wherever you catch it. Have your partner get your rebounds and pass you the ball. Change places until you have completed 5 successful shots. You can use this drill for three point competitions too.

Performing these drills consistently will definitely increase your range and your ability to make shots wherever you are on the court. Couple that with ball handling workouts, and you will be unstoppable.
