subject: Using The Right Exercise Mats [print this page]

There are many advantages of having your own Fitness Mats. A lot of them are practical, such as clearly marking out your space during an exercise class. Having your own also ensures that you know your mat has been washed and prepared for the class. If you are exercising at home, it makes sure you do not leave any sweat stains on the floor.

It is also a good idea for you to own a fitness mat for practical reasons. If you are exercising at home, it prevents you getting sweat stains on your carpet. When using a Swiss ball, a mat will ensure that your ball is less likely to be popped from the floor. Anyone going to a gym can usually use the mats available. However it is probably more beneficial and hygienic to use your own and regularly wash it.

Other workouts may require a thicker mat, especially ones that concentrate on the floor. If you do sit-ups or pilates floor exercises it is recommended to spend more on a mat with a good amount of padding, especially if you are doing this kind of floor exercise. A yoga mat in this instance would not be suitable as it would not cushion the impact as effectively as a thicker mat.

Like any product, exercise mats come in a variety of shapes, sizes and are made from different materials. Generally it is advised to go for longer mats with more padding and traction as these will help cushion the impact of a large variety of exercises. You can get mats that you can roll or fold for easy storage and transportation. Make sure when you buy them that they can be easily laid out flat as this will affect the grip on the floor.

Another issue is the materials in the mats. Traditionally most mats are made from synthetic materials such as PVC or rubber. However if you are more green conscious then there are also organic alternatives such as jute, a material commonly used in reusable supermarket bags. Some websites also feature used and recycled mats.

It is generally recommended to go with high quality brand fitness mats. This will ensure you get the most traction as well as being more likely to give you the longest usage from them. This means you will not get your mat sliding along a hardwood floor.

When choosing a mat online, you should also consider where you will be using your mat. If you are exercising from home then you should choose one you can easily store. Mats for the gym should be easy to carry and some come with additional straps for simpler transportation. Whatever type you choose, make sure you pick one that can always be laid out flat for best possible grip. If you are unsure about which Exercise Mats are best for the kind of exercise you are completing, then you should contact your local gym instructor or look online for feedback and demonstration videos.
