subject: About Your Handbag [print this page]

A girl's best friend, next to diamonds and possibly shoes, is her handbag. Handbags carry everything of importance to us, credit cards, cell phones, diary, make-up, as well as many other items, some of which are a mystery - we can no longer remember a use for them or how they come to be carried in our bags!

A woman's handbag is certainly one of the wonders of civilisation.

Today, women's handbags are not only transporters of our prized possessions but also fashion statements. Handbags can be used to express moods, individuality, style and status. Although bags are not quite as immediately part of your clothing as skirts, jeans or blouses there are however sizes, shapes and styles of handbags that may be flattering and unflattering. Though it may seem far-fetched, the handbag that you carry can give the impression of added or lessened weight and possibly change the perception of your height.

There are certain elements to choosing the ideal shape, style and size of the handbag that will complement and flatter your body type and preferred style of dress. Some of these are:

The Shape of the Handbag

Think of your body shape and choose a bag that is the opposite. For example, if you're tall and slim, look for bags of a rounded shape such a the hobo or a bag with an unstructured look. This would complement your figure and provide a contrast.

If on the other hand, you are shorter and curvy, it is a good idea to carry handbags that are narrow, rectangular and with really defined shapes. The long, smooth designs will help counterbalance your more rounded figure. Of course, it is not necessary to buy handbags that are extremely narrow or with really sharp edges. Silhouettes in soft fabrics and leathers can do the trick. The main thing is to forget about bags with rounded shapes.

The Size of the Handbag

The size of your bag should complement your size. While the shape should be contrasting and complementing, the size should be in proportion. A really small handbag would not appear appropriate for you to carry if you are tall and slim. If you are a really petite person carrying a really large bag could not look (or feel) anything but awkward.

Clutch style bags which are often carried right under the arm at breast level can only look great with women who are slim . This kind of bag is not suitable for women who have big arms and big busts as they tend to emphasise the larger sizes. You should take note of the length of the handbag or shoulder bag handle. The bag will always accentuate the part it is nearest to.. If, for instance, the bag hangs at your bottom half or hip area, then that area of your body will become more focused as the eyes are naturally drawn to it.

Most women look great with shoulder bags that end in mid-torso as this flatters the waist. To determine whether the length of the strap is right for you, try it out. If your arm feels cramped by the bag then the strap is too short. Model the bag in front of a mirror and check for yourself whether the bag is flattering to you.
