subject: Scheduling Your At Home Workout [print this page] If you are going from not working out at all, scheduling time for your workout may prove to be a challenge in the beginning. But if you are serious about getting into shape and strengthening your heart you will have to find the time to strength train 3 times a week and do aerobic exercises 5 times per week. This is optimal, but you have to start somewhere and it will take some time for you to get used to your new schedule.
Try to pick a time that you will not be interrupted by the outside world. For me, this is my time. Many people like to exercise first thing in the morning so that they get it out of the way. That may not be an option for everyone. For a stay-at-home mom, workout time may be when the kids are napping or at school. For a person that spends their day in the corporate world, workout time may be in the evening. Your workout time is when it best fits into your day. For some, this may mean breaking the time up into 15 or 20 minute segments. The experts say that the benefits are the same, whether you exercise for 60 minutes without interruption or for three 20 minute blocks.
Before you can make something a habit you have to get started. Find something you like and just do it. It may take a few weeks to find something that you enjoy. For me, I had to look for something different as the weather got cold. I was used to walking in my neighborhood and not liking the cold, I resorted to going to the gym and using my treadmill when the weather changed. When it gets warm, I will head back outside. Part of a good workout routine is finding something that you enjoy and sticking with it.
