Nas (aka Nasty Nas, Nastradamus, Nas formerly Escobar), whose real name Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones, is an American rapper born September 14, 1973 in Long Island.

He is the son of jazz musician Olu Dara (Charles Jones III) and Fannie Ann Jones. He was born into an artistic family: his grandfather, a teacher in Mississippi, sang in a quartet of jazz, his great-grandfather was a folk singer. His little brother Jungle (Jabari Jones), is a member of the rap group Bravehearts, and his cousin is none other than Millennium Thug (NaShawn Jones). He has a daughter, Destiny, who was born in 1994 from its union with Carmen Bryan, his girlfriend at the time.

His family initially lived in Crown Heights in Brooklyn before demanager Queensbridge in the late 1970s . He left school early, in grade 8, and remained in Queensbridge, New York slum, one of the places where hip hop was born (with many rappers like Mobb Deep, Infamous Mobb, Juice Crew, Marley Marl MC Shan, Blaq Poet, Capone, Tragedy Khadafi, Roxanne Shante, Bravehearts, Cormega, Nature).

It is therefore natural that Nas became interested in hip hop with her friends while studying together music, literature, African culture, the Bible ,or the history of hip hop self. He then devoted himself for some time to breakdance in the name of "Kid Wave before finally being called" Nas "(the initials of his name but also acronym Nigga Against Society as he explains in The Cross, or Not yet Surrender All (All do not give up) ). He then began rapping with his best friend, DJ Ill Will (Willie Graham) with the group "Devastating Seven". His parents divorced in 1985 .

In 1991, Nas began his career with a verse on the song "Live at the Barbeque" by Main Source. His rhymes quickly attracted attention to himself in the hip hop community, so much so that its benefits Vallent him comparisons with legendary New York hip hop at the time: Rakim . It is thus approached by MC Serch of 3rd Bass for which he made the song Halftime, which appears on the soundtrack to the film Zebrahead . Nas and Ill Will continue to work together until the latter was assassinated at the bottom of his home May 23, 1992. Nas later called his label in his honor.

Nas then sign Serch's label, Columbia, and released his debut album Illmatic in 1994. The album contains the titles NY State Of Mind (produced by DJ Premier , half the group Gang Starr), The World Is Yours (produced by Pete Rock ), One Love (in reference to incarceration Cormega his friend, song produced by Q-Tip of A Tribe Called Quest) and "It Is not Hard To Tell (produced by Large Professor).

His second album, It Was Written, released in summer 1996 and is more oriented toward pop. The album rencontrae success [10] with the singles "If I Ruled The World (with Lauryn Hill) and Street Dreams. The album features many guests, including Mobb Deep, Jo-Jo Hailey of Jodeci.

This then marked the debut of The Firm (group consisting of Nas, AZ, Foxy Brown and Cormega ). After signing with the label Aftermath Entertainment, rapper and producer Dr. Dre (when were collaborations between artists from the east and west), The Firm began working on her debut album. Halfway through the production of the album, Cormega will be excluded by the band's producer Steve Stoute and was replaced by Nature. The album Nas, Foxy Brown, AZ and Nature Present The Firm: The Album is finally released in 1997. But the group will not last, and the album will be criticized, judged too commercial and very creative .

In 1998, to forget this episode, Nas will prove more productive and tried his luck at the cinema in the film directed by Hype Williams Belly and in which he starred with DMX and Method Man. He will begin working on a double album project he wanted to be midway between Illmatic and It Was Written to be called I Am .. Autobiography. But that project failed because most of the songs were illegally downloaded before leaving . It will therefore be forced to reduce the album to a single CD he titled I Am ... The album features Nas Is Like (produced by DJ Premier) and Hate Me Now (with Puff Daddy).

His fourth album, Nastradamus, was released in November 1999. It contains in particular You Owe Me produced by Timbaland and Ginuwine as well as with Windows Project which was initially included on the second CD I Am Although commercially successful (platinum in the U.S. ), the album was strongly attacked by critics [who?] Nas who accused him of turning into pop music.

In 2000, he also formed a collective of rappers from Queensbridge and threw the QB Finest compilation. The compilation will not be a big commercial success .From this album came the single "Oochie Wally with his brother's group Bravehearts, and the single" Da Bridge 2001 involving Capone, Cormega, Marley Marl, MC Shan, Millennium Thug, Mobb Deep, Tragedy Khadafi Nature.
