subject: 5 Things To Keep In Mind When Looking For In A Gym [print this page]

If you're someone who is used to exercising, keeping fit and working out in a gym, you're likely to know exactly what it is that you personally need when looking for a new gym.

For someone who has never been to a gym before (or someone who hasn't been in many years), it's difficult to know what it is you should be looking for, especially as it's easy to think that one gym is exactly the same as another.

And to a certain extent, all gyms are the same as they allow their members to use the equipment provided to increase the fitness levels.

However, there are several differences - some subtle, some more distinct - that are apparent between gyms and to ensure that you choose the most appropriate one for your needs, keep in mind the following 5 points when looking for a gym.

1. What are you looking to achieve? - this is arguably the most important point that you need to consider when looking, as although it may sound surprising if you're not familiar with different gyms, you could easily sign up to the wrong one for your needs.

For example, if you're simply looking to lose weight by carrying out regular cardiovascular exercises, attending a gym that revolves heavily around a certain sport, such as boxing, will generally not be as beneficial as attending a larger, more all-rounded gym.

2. Will the available equipment allow you to achieve your goals? - once you've decided on what you want to achieve and have a selection of suitable gyms available to look at, when you're having a tour of them, ask yourself whether the equipment that's available will allow you to achieve your goals.

Look at whether the equipment is new and also whether there's enough to go around, especially if you're only able to attend at peak times.

3. Do you need assistance? - most gyms will have instructors and personal trainers available to help you work out if need be, but not every gym will have several available at once and some will require for you to book them.

If you need assistance with your work out, make sure that instructors are available at the times you'll be visiting and more importantly, that they're fully qualified.

4. What additional facilities are provided? - for some people, they need nothing more than a changing room, a treadmill, bench press machine and a shower.

For others, they want the gym to have a whole host of additional features, from exercise classes to steam rooms and if you fall into this category, make sure that the gym ticks all of the boxes, but don't be too rigid - if you have a long list of criteria, you're unlikely to get everything you want without paying a small fortune in membership fees.

5. Are there any benefits? - the reason you're going to the gym is to get fit and healthy, but it's always worthwhile looking to see if you get any perks for being a member. Being able to take a friend along for free on a weekend may not seem like a massive plus, but if you're the type of person who prefers to work out with someone alongside you, it could be a strong selling point.
