subject: A Few Things About Learning Self Defense, Taking Action, And Correct Training That You Should Know [print this page] Have you enrolled in that martial arts program or talked to a self defense instructor to discuss the next step in your personal self defense training yet? If not, when will you take action?
Just like a "Protection From Abuse" order, or PFA, that we have in our legal system here in the US, these lessons are only words on your computer screen or on a piece of paper. And the self defense classes and techniques being taught in those classes you keep "thinking about taking,"are absolutely worthless to you during an attack, unless you take the necessary steps to participate in them and turn them into your own knowledge, skills, and attitudes for survival.
Contrary to popular belief, you WILL NOT remember this stuff, or anything you read, watch, or learn in a class unless the lessons are imprinted on your subconscious and unconscious mind, and on your muscle-memory. We'd like to think that our left-brain, rational mind that's learning this stuff and reading the words will be in control during an attack. But, the truth is, that part of your mind will be the first thing to bail out on you, leaving you to whatever is in your storehouse consciousness, or subconscious mind - if anything - to deal with your attacker's brutal assault.
Just as your body will be reduced to using gross motor skills, your brain function will narrow to areas that, I can almost guarantee, you are not used to operating with effectively. And, unless you either have the real world experience that teaches you how to function when in that state, or you have a teacher who can lead you through drills and exercises that help to reproduce it, you will be completely surprised at how differently you operate in a physical attack, not against friends in class, but against someone who doesn't care about you at all!
What are your pressing problems or training needs? What kind of attacks are you most worried about? And, more importantly, how do you know that you can trust what you have already learned, practiced, seen, and come to believe - to work when the chips are down and his knife is speeding toward your throat?
Of all the things that you could invest your time, effort and money in that would enhance your life, nothing is more powerful than investing in yourself, and your own personal safety. but then...
Until "you" believe that, you probably won't take the steps you need to take!
