subject: What is Ladder Handicapping and How Can You Use it to Handicap Horse Races [print this page]

One of the biggest problems handicappers have is how to compare different factors in horse racing and know which is more important. For instance, when looking at class versus early speed, which one matters most? Let's say you have a real classy horse that lacks early speed and a less experienced or tested horse that has a lot of early speed. You know that early speed wins a lot of races at the distance.

But the class horse you are looking at has won in the past at a higher level coming from off the pace. How can you tell which horse has the edge and what a reasonable bet is on each of them? Let's say the class horse is at 4-1 and the speed horse is at 3-1. Which one is a better bet?

The only way to know is to know how much better speed horses fare against class and how classy your class horse is and how speedy the speedster really is.

As humans we are visually oriented. We understand things we can see much better. Therefore, being able to look at a visual aid that clearly shows which horse has the edge would make the whole method much easier. Also, seeing a visual that shows how much more important one factor is than the other would make it easier to know if 3-1 is better odds than 4-1.

That is why ladder handicapping is so powerful. Ladder handicapping allows you to keep records of your track and to see how each handicapping factor stacks up against the other. Learning Ladder handicapping will provide you with a way to make your own visuals for any factor you wish to measure. Imagine the power of being able to compare any factors that the runners have or to compare your own handicapping ability and finding your own strengths and weaknesses. Using a visual method like ladder handicapping.
