subject: How Replacement Windows Can Save You Money [print this page]

When you feel a draft, you know you're wasting money. Replacing your old windows with windows that boast the latest in energy efficient technology can help make drafts a thing of the past and can significantly lower your monthly utility costs. But utility bill savings is only one of the reasons upgrading your home's energy efficiency is a smart financial decision. Here are a few of the other ways replacing your windows can save you money.

Federal Tax Credits for Consumer Energy Efficiency

Through December 31, 2010, if you replace the windows in your primary residence with Energy Star qualified windows, you can receive a tax credit of up to 30% of the cost up to $1,500 (not including installation). All styles of windows qualify, from sliding windows to casement windows and more. As long as the windows meet two energy efficiency requirements: 1) the replacement windows must have a U Factor of less than or equal to .30 (U Factor is a measurement of how well the window prevents heat from escaping. Lower number are better); 2) the replacement windows must also have a Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) of less than or equal to .30 (SHGC measures how well a windows blocks heat gain from the sun. Lower numbers are, again, better numbers). The immediate tax payoffs if you make the change this year can make replacing your windows now a smart financial decision.

Increasing the Value of Your Home

Installing new sliding windows, double hung windows, or any number of other styles can make your home sparkle, and a home that looks great is worth more. But energy efficiency is its own selling point. Prospective buyers will be as drawn to the utility savings as you are.

Replacing your windows is an investment, but it's one that pays off in clear ways, now and in the future.
