subject: Learn To Street Fight From A Dvd? [print this page]

"Dad, can you help me learn how to street fight?

I was shocked when my eighteen year old daughter asked me that question recently. First I wondered, why she would be so interested in fighting. Then I wondered why she would ask me about it. After all, I am no martial arts expert.

As the conversation continued, I was happy to discover that even at eighteen, daddys little girl still sees me as big, strong, and indestructible (At this point in time Im choosing not to tell her about my lower back problems and other issues that have begun to spring up as the result of so many years as a desk jockey).

She also shared with me that as she looks around at the world and sees all the mean and nasty things people tend to do to one another, she believes it would be smart to learn some self defense. I agreed with her whole heartedly.

Proving once more to be wise beyond her years, she shared that it was her belief that they typical sport Karate school or the average sport oriented martial arts school would probably not provide what is really needed for down and dirty self defense. Having a bit of experience in martial arts from twenty some odd years back, I had to agree.

Daddys girl then went on to explain that she felt that since self defense would take place on the street, it would make much more sense to know the secrets to real world no holds barred life or death street fighting. I couldn't argue with her thought process. However, being a guy who hasnt been in a fight since high school twenty five years ago, I really didnt see myself as the right person to prepare her for the perils she was expecting to possibly encounter at some point in life.

As she shared her desire to be educated in the arts of real world self defense, the same desire began to be stirred up in me. As a result, I began a quest for great street fighting instructors who we might be able to get some lessons from.

In our city, that search was fruitless. So I began to look at some instructional alternatives, which led me to several mind blowing street fighting DVDs put together by some amazing and somewhat scary individuals.

Some were military trained here in the states or abroad. Others were self taught street fighters who had to learn what works and what doesnt the hard way!

Not only have I learned a lot from the DVDs Ive watched, but so has my daughter. On top of that, we've had some great daddy and daughter time learning how to street fight together! I just hope neither one of us has to ever put our fighting knowledge to the test in a life or death situation.

It's amazing what you can learn these days without ever leaving the house.
