subject: Visit the Land of the Little People and the Big Creatures [print this page] Since the huge popularity of The Lord of the Rings movies more and more people worldwide have embraced the idea of elves, some only secretly, but... Icelanders have long had an affection for the little people, and local beliefs and folklore have it that the boulders around the town of Hafnarfjordur have elfin homes hidden inside.
There are elf tours in this quintessentially Icelandic town and getting there from Reykjavik by car is easy. If you look around, you can find some great car hire deals.
Icelandic roads are very well signposted so you can hire a car in Reykjavik, take the Kingrumylarbraut onto the Hafnarfjararvegur and drive straight through to Hafnarfjordur which is also where there are great whale watching opportunities. It was from Hafnarfjordur that the whale who starred in the Free Willy movie hailed.
Just as in any foreign destination, driving regulations may be different in Iceland than what you are used to, so do some research before you set out.
So, Whales and Elves, a strange mixture if ever there was one
You could say that the town of Hafnarfjordur offers the chance to see some of the biggest creatures on earth and the chance to at least believe, if not see, some of the smallest.
And whales and elves aside there are Vikings!
During the Summer Solstice it's the Viking Festival where you can see examples of ancient arts and crafts, buy Viking memorabilia and, if you are courageous enough, challenge a warrior in Viking attire to demonstrate his ancient battle prowess.
