subject: Five Reasons Why you Need to Experience Backpacking [print this page]

Maybe you are reading this article during a lunch break at the office or in bed on a lazy Sunday morning. Maybe you are browsing the net for inspiration from the 9 to 5 life. Well this is it my friend! The answer is that tatty backpack lying in the bottom of your wardrobe last used for your Duke of Edinburgh Award when you were aged 14. Here is why we believe the humble backpack can take you on the journey of a lifetime.

There are: canyons in Peru, volcanoes in Chile, deep jungle in Brazil and gorillas in Uganda. We live in such a tiny part of this world which is filled with natural beauty. You owe it to yourself to go and stand in awe of Mother Nature at her finest.

You are a product of your society. We are all influenced by the environment in which we live in and how the people think and live around us. Backpacking allows you to experience other cultures and gives you the privilege of meeting people from around the world. We can learn so much from Jordanian family life or how a Lao village lives in community. This allows the intrepid backpacker the chance to look back on their society from the outside a fascinating perspective.

It will make you happy! Probably. Unless you are stuck on a rickety, leaky overnight bus dreaming of your comfy bed back home. But it's all worth it when you arrive at that Thai town and can't wait to explore the markets, visit the temples and eat steaming soup with noodles.

The food: sticky Lao rice, Peruvian stews packed full of beans, fresh Turkish bread with olives, Thai green curry and Argentinean steak. It's all waiting for you at the end of that plane ride!

Backpacking opens your eyes to the world around you. Sometimes it is breathtakingly beautiful and sometimes it is unexpectedly hospitable. At times the lives of others may make us realise the wealth and opportunity we have been lucky enough to be born with. All of this is the world as it is and these experiences can shape us for the better. Let your backpack take you on a journey of a lifetime you may never want to come back!
