The invention of the digital camera was a wonderful thing. All of the sudden instead of waiting for film to develop we have instant gratification. If a picture isn't perfect the first time, you can go ahead and take another picture right away. Our most treasured moments are easily captured and can be sent via the web to anyone anywhere in the world.

But something strange happened with the advent of digital cameras. People stopped printing photographs. Instead of pictures being leafed through with us having a nostalgic trip down memory lane, the pictures end up lost in hard drives or on Facebook. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but there is something magical about leafing through a photo album and sharing it with those you love or are even first getting to know.

Instead of leaving your pictures unorganized, off to collect digital dust, consider putting them together in a photobook. There are many companies that you can put these together, whether you want to spend only a few minutes or months and months. There are some versions that look like a spiral bound, simple flipbook and others that are reminiscent of a coffee table showpiece book. Whatever way you wish to express yourself, a photobook will preserve those memories more than leaving files on your computer.

To make a photobook, I recommend starting with a theme. For example a major event like a wedding or bar mitzvah. You might also consider celebrating a milestone like baby's first year or a major wedding anniversary. A photobook is also a good way of putting together memories from a special trip or other adventures. The theme of your book may drive your decisions for page backgrounds and colors.

Next, assemble your photos somewhere on your computer. I would start with a folder where you pull together all the photos you are potentially interested in using. This can help you later, since if you build your book online, you will probably have to upload the pictures to the company's server. You may also want to ask your friends and family if they have pictures to contribute to the project. Then, name your photos something other the default that comes with your digital camera to help you organize them better. Now you're ready to start building your book. Have fun and use your sense of humor.

One closing thought, before ordering your book, look online for coupons. Most major companies will have deals, especially for new customers.
