subject: Two Contrasting Experiences of Moving Home [print this page]

I am 26 years old, and I've already had to move home two times. The first place I lived was obviously with my parents, their house is close to my dream house - it's big and open. They have three bedrooms with closets in all of them. Then there is their backyard/front yard - it is huge, as if they saw this big rectangle of wonderful grass and plopped their house right in the middle of it. I've been moving around trying to find a house that can match up to their home ever since.

I moved at 23, into a tiny apartment with my boyfriend and my six month pregnant belly. When we first started looking for apartments to move into we checked our local classifieds. We kept seeing apartments that sounded right for us. All we cared about at that was finding a three or four bedroom home. We wanted one room for us, one for his daughter from before, and one for his son from before and our unborn baby. So we singled out this one apartment, and I nervously called.

All in all we had it pretty easy moving in there; I didn't have very much stuff, just 2 dressers, a bed, and some miscellaneous junk. My boyfriend hardly had any stuff either. We felt like big kids doing grown-up things. I got the best side of moving then, because I was pregnant I didn't have to carry, move, and lift stuff! I was in charge of telling everyone where to put the boxes which was fine by me! It was all good and grand until we started unpacking and realizing that we didn't have a lot of the general things you need for your own place. We needed paper towels, garbage cans, a plunger, food, napkins, toilet paper, and laundry detergent.

Two years later, we moved again, and this time it was a different story. At the ripe old age of twenty five I became a home owner. A friend of my parents had a house that nobody had lived in for 5 years. He said all it did was cost him money paying the property taxes on it every year. So after a lot of back and forth talk he decided to sell it to us at a reasonable price.

This time, I was busy, busy, busy! I had a lot of cleaning to do. The floors, windows, and refrigerator they left us were extremely dirty. The walls in the house were stained yellowish from the previous owners smoking in here so much. So we did a lot of painting. It was fun getting everything done, and in the end I was proud because it was a complete transformation. Unpacking and finding "homes" for everything has proven to be somewhat of a challenge to us though. We have lived in this house for 1 years and we still have unpacked boxes from when we moved. One day I will complete this move!
