subject: How Do Collagen and Elastin Work on the Skin [print this page]

Most of us spend huge amounts of money of skin products but not all of know what the problems we are trying to deal with are or what causes them, for instance a person can go into a shop and buy a skin product that is said to increase collagen and elastin without even knowing what both these substances are to begin with.

So today I am going to focus particularly on collagen and elastin and why they are said to be essential. So how do collagen and elastin work on the skin?

Collagen is a protein that is produced by the body, this protein is said to hold the body together this is because this protein is made of strong fibers that weave through the body connecting and supporting every tissue and every other part of the body. The protein holds important body organs together and it gives the body its shape.

Elastin is also a fibrous protein that is produced by body and like its name suggests this protein is responsible for elasticity particularly in the skin. This is the protein that gives the body the ability to stay the same through out the body changes that it goes through.

By body changes I am referring to stuff like weight gain and loss. For example, when you suddenly gain excessive weight, this protein enables your skin stretch and adjust to the changes.

Without the elastin-protein the skin would be limited to stretch to a certain measure and when you lost weight it would hang loose.

How do collagen and elastin work on the skin?

Both proteins work hand in hand to prevent skin conditions such as wrinkles, forehead lines and skin sagging.
