An academic discipline is a branch of knowledge which is taught with this or that kind of method. Of course the choice of a method depends on a discipline. Anthropology can not be taught as well as Chemistry can. Each discipline usually has several sub-disciplines.

So lets try to find out what is History as an academic discipline. Teachers of history usually say that they see history as both insiders, participators of actions, and outsiders, outer observers and analytics of action.

Sub-disciplines of History

Historians try to investigate history from different aspects:

History as a part of society. The historian used various methods of sociology trying to answer different historical questions. Besides they were trying to investigate the link between society and culture and how they change through time.

Another kind of history is environmental. This type of history deals with different reasons which influence culture.

Synchronically history is being investigated at this moment. It is rather important to study and analyze political and cultural situation nowadays to prognosticate the development of action in future.

Diachronically history is being investigated in the light of past actions and results which they had on this or that society and the world.

There exists another kind of history, Diplomatic history, which studies international relations between different states.

Gender history deals with the role of men and women. Besides it is closely connected with the investigation of women position in contemporary society.

Public history describes a lot of activities undertaken by people with some training in the discipline of history.

Military history usually concentrates on wars, war strategies.

Cultural history deals with language, traditions, customs, and art of different societies on different levels of their development.
