subject: Best Antivirus - Need Help in Selecting the Best Antivirus Software Available? [print this page]

So your computer has been infected with a deadly virus. Or perhaps you have heard of the dangers and want to get some virus protection software. Either way we all want to use the best antivirus software available. But how does one know if one is better than another? They all claim to be top rated antivirus software. So how can you tell the difference?

There are actually a few features that are vitally important in any antivirus program. Before you go out and purchase antivirus protection make sure it can do the following:

o Provide real time protection. Sure detection and removal are very important, but if your antivirus program can stop it from getting on your computer in your first place then you have nothing to worry about. No real time protection is 100%, but it can considerably cut down on the frequency of virus infections.

o Consistently update software to protect against latest threats. An antivirus program can only detect what is in its "threat database". If consistent updates are not offered them you will have no protection against the latest and deadliest threats. An antivirus tool that does not keep its database updated can be almost useless.

o Full system and deep registry scanning. The latest viruses do not just install a couple malicious files that can be easily deleted by yourself. They can often spread 20-50 deadly files throughout your computer including in very sensitive and hard to reach areas. Most antivirus programs cannot scan registry folders and other deeply embedded system folders. This is a problem because these are exactly the places viruses hang out in.

While there are other very important features to look for, these are the ones that separate the men from the boys. Skimp out on virus protection at your own risk. Deadly viruses use spyware and keyloggers to record sensitive information like passwords and credit card numbers. They can also corrupt your registry which can cause a fatal collapse of your hard drive. The potential damage of either can be in the thousands. Wouldn't it be wise to purchase the best antivirus to prevent that from ever happening for you?
