subject: How To Decorate Your Patio [print this page]

Do you want an apartment to have an outdoor space that you want to make look cozy, but just don't know how? An outdoor living area can be a great place to host friends, whether it is for relaxation, or enjoying a nice brunch, or having an evening barbeque with family. You should consider two things at the top of your list when planning to design your outdoor living space. These things are the comfort and the practicality.

If you're in an apartment, it is most that likely your outside area is fairly small. When planning, try to make space for conversation, as well as for the shade. If you don't consider shade, the patio could become quite warm and unbearable on a sunny afternoon which is a bad thing. Here are a few other things to consider:

Know the theme that you want. Do you want something open and sunny, or something that's more closed in and provides a sense of coziness? Using things like hedges and plants can help create a sense of seclusion, as well as reducing the noise levels from your neighbors. Putting plants can also help add color to your patio.

The next thing to consider is lighting, especially if you plan to use it a lot in the evening. Having soft lighting and fragrant candles can really add to the atmosphere. Both subtle floor lamps and hanging lights can be a great choice. Another option to consider is solar lighting. These types of lights soak up energy during the daytime, then provide lighting at night.

Consider the use of furniture. Using too much furniture or pieces that are too big can really take away from the atmosphere of your patio. To minimize the amount of space they take up, consider purchasing pieces that are wicker, or something similar to that. You can also add an element of comfort to your patio by using cushions that compliment the design. Also, tables are another good option because you will probably want somewhere to place your food and drink if you plan to host others. Select the tables that are small and round so they don't take up a lot of your limited space.

Adding trickling water to your patio can be a great way to create a sense of relaxation. Depending on your space, you can find a small fountain that's no more than a foot high, or opt for something larger to really fill up your space.

The final factor to consider is the maintenance. After choosing all of these wonderful features for your patio, it's important you make sure they'll last for an extended period of time. In cases of furniture with cushions, consider purchasing a cover for it so it's protected from the rain and every-day wear and tear.
