So XP freezes up on you at random timesSo XP freezes up on you at random times. There are few things as annoying as Windows XP freezing up at unexpected moments and losing whatever you were working on. I know, because my computer used to freeze up all the time. I tried reinstalling the OS and yet I still had problems. The freezes just kept getting worse and worse. What I later discovered was the problems came from my Windows registry.

Before messing with the registry, another cause of an XP freeze is running too many programs at once or not having your system updated. If the computer locks up when you have 8 browser windows open while listening to iTunes and playing minesweeper then the culprit it too much multitasking. The only way to get around this is running less programs or purchasing additional RAM.

Sometimes XP freezing can be caused by not keeping your system up to date with the latest patches. When that little icon in the bottom right says it's time to update your system then you better listen. But more than likely the problem is caused from the registry.

The Windows XP registry is a directory lots of people know about but few know how it works. It is actually the most important area of your computer. All information required to run software and hardware is located in the registry. Anytime you add something new to your computer, registry entries are also added.

But unfortunately when you remove programs the registry entries remain. This can cause all kinds of problems. The information becomes useless and can potentially corrupt other registry files. This can cause XP freezes, the windows blue screen of death, computer crashing, and a host of other problems. It also slows down your computer by creating unneeded congestion within your registry.

The only way to repair an XP freeze is to fix the Windows registry I do not recommend messing with your registry manually unless you are very good with computers. The area is very sensitive and if you remove the wrong files you can make problems worse.
