subject: How to Protect Yourself from Getting Scabies from Hotel Bedding [print this page]

Scabies is one of the most talked about skin conditions all over the world. It is caused by parasites, commonly referred to as mites. Loads of people have reported that they have acquired scabies from hotel bedding. For the most part, people usually have a myth that a condition like scabies is associated with underdeveloped countries; however there are one million cases of scabies reported from United States alone.

The species of the mite that infests humans is called Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis. Scabies is an infectious skin condition and spread while coming in direct or indirect contact with the mites. At the same time as human-human contact is quite prevalent, hotel bedding often seems to be under diagnosed and overlooked. The scabies mites and their eggs can survive without the human host for about 2-3 days. Therefore infestation through beddings is quite prevalent.

Since it is impossible to detect the presence of scabies on hotel beddings, the best form of defence would be barrier protection and still inspection. Inspection involves detecting the beddings, just to ensure that the linens are fresh and have been laundered before use. On the other hand, you can always carry a barrier travel sheet that contains small pores. This is the best form of protection after inspection. There are cotton travel sheets available in the market, which tend to form a physical barrier against bedbugs, lice as well as scabies. Choose only those travel sheets which could be washed in hot water and re-used while your away.
