The Beckoning was shot on location in Marin County, the beautiful California county that reaches out to you as you cross the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco. The legendary privateer, Sir Francis Drake is a cult hero in Marin, since it is widely presumed he landed on the beaches there with his trusty galleon, The Golden HInde, circa 1579. Even though Sir Drake is a Brit, you'd think he and his band of ruffians were born and raised along the road that roams the county and bears his name. In The Beckoning, Drake returns to the county for a good old-fashioned witch burning and relentless haunting.
Today, so many movies are shot on back lots and sets, be they humble or grandiose. I for one, am a die hard fan of movie locations that are real. There is a certain core essence of filmmaking that can't be duplicated, especially in the small, indie film genre - as a matter of fact, it's truly part of the experience. The Beckoning is filmed at a haunted farmhouse, a deserted marina and a theological society; a quaint beach town and a historical mansion.I believe Sir Drake himself might have approved.
