Christmas Facts
There are lots of myths about Christmas and the origins of certain traditions so we thought that as well as telling you how great Personalised Baubles are we'd tell you a bit about the origins of baubles and Christmas decorations! Christmas baubles are said to have originated from Germany in the mid 19th century and they were dreamt up by a man called Hans Greiner who lived and worked in Lauscha. He made special glass beads in to sparkling garlands and tin figures which could be hung on trees as decorations. Baubles have been made since 1847 according to some sources and there are millions of different sizes and designs.
Baubles are Round
Baubles by their very name are always round and it's thought they drew this name from the bauble on the end of a Jester's sceptre. Flat and other shaped decorations are actually referred to as Christmas ornaments because bauble alludes to the spherical shape of round decorations. In Poland baubles are called 'bombka' which translates to 'little bomb' in English which makes sense because they really do look like little bombs, don't they?
Apples and Popcorn
According to notes which document early Christmas trees, they were originally decorated with fresh apples (which have been replaced by baubles), strings of popcorn (which have since been replaced with tinsel) white and red striped candy canes (which are still sometimes used today!) and pastries and cookies in the shapes of stars, flowers and even hearts. That all sounds delicious to us. To this day many people still decorate their tree with foil covered chocolate treats and home-made cookie ornaments!
Making Baubles
Early baubles were made from glass and this glass was heated over a flame and then put in to a clay mould. Originally, the ornaments made by Hans in Germany were shaped like nuts and fruits. However, after Hans Greiner started making ornaments, they were suddenly in demand so lots of other glass workers in Lauscha started to follow suit. They produced a wide range of designs. Even Queen Victoria's Christmas tree (which featured in a newspaper in London) was decorated with glass ornaments imported from Germany.
Soon, an American named F. W. Woolworth discovered the glass ornaments in Germany during the 1880s and he made a fortune by exporting them to the US for a US customer-base which he nurtured there. Since then, the rest as they say is history and with factory processes coming in during the industrial revolution pretty soon ornaments and baubles were being mass produced.
