subject: Slow Computer Start Up? 3 Ways to Make Your Computer Start Up Faster [print this page]

If it takes your computer longer than 60 seconds to boot up then the information below is an absolute must read. Even an older computer shouldn't take longer than a couple of minutes to boot up completely. If your computer is slow to start up then you might have a problem. Here are 3 ways that you can make your computer startup faster.

1. Check Your Windows Start Up Folder - You might have programs that start up automatically when you boot up your computer. These might be programs that you use occasionally but don't need to start up automatically when you boot up. You can access this list of programs by using Microsoft's system configuration utility. Hold down the Windows key and tap "R" on the keyboard. This will bring up the "Run" prompt. Type msconfig and press "run". Next, click on the tab called "startup" and uncheck any program that you want to disable from starting up automatically when the computer boots up. Once you've done this, go ahead and reboot your computer. You will notice that your computer should start up much faster this time around.

2. Upgrade to Windows 7 - Microsoft went out of its way to improve Windows 7 boot up time. They dedicated a team that focused specifically on startup performance. For Windows 7, the goal was to significantly increase the number of systems that experience very good boot times and in the lab a very good system was a system that could boot up under 15 seconds.

3. Clean Your Windows Registry - Problems with your windows registry can cause your system to start up very slowly, cause your system to be sluggish in general, and even cause your system to freeze. The windows registry is a database that contains information on every program installed or uninstalled. Without regular maintenance the registry can become corrupted and damaged depending on PC usage. It is highly recommended that you clean your registry once per month. There are a number of registry cleaning programs available on the internet. I would recommend going to a registry cleaner review so that you can find the registry cleaner that works best with your system.
