subject: How To Mimic A Strongman Workout [print this page]

If you have seen a Strongman competition in person or on television, chances are you have wondered how the athletes can lift such heavy things and participate in such intense events. These men train extremely diligently and force their bodies to do things that not every human being's can do.

However, there is a way that you can do some of the same types of workouts as them, without injuring yourself or becoming too bulky. These professionals spend great deals of time lifting heavy objects, like metal barrels, industrial sized car parts, truck wheels, and all different other types of objects.

These types of events are somewhat modeled after the Highland Games of Scottish heritage, where competitors would lift and throw extremely heavy objects to prove their strength and manliness. This modern day example is just as competitive and requires even more training and determination.

It is advised that you be very careful when performing any exercises modeled after these events. Do not try to overexert yourself or do things that you have not built the strength to do.

If you feel pain in your joints, limbs, or back, you may need to lower the amount of weight you are using, try different materials, or rest your body altogether. However, there are definitely ways that you can try some of the same types of events while also getting a workout and building a great deal of body strength and fitness.

If you are hoping to gain more muscle, you must be eating the type of diet that would encourage this. Take into account how much protein your body will need if you plan to increase muscle mass.

You can equal this amount by eating some form of lean protein at every meal, along with healthy fruits and vegetables. Another great option is to add soy, egg, or whey protein into milkshakes and smoothies to put on weight and give your muscles the building blocks they need to regenerate themselves.

Though you most likely do not wish to lose a great deal of weight, you must be sure to get at least a healthy amount of daily cardiovascular exercise on some kind of exercise equipment. Running on a treadmill or riding a bike will help keep you heart healthy and lower your chance for heart disease.

It will also help the fat buildup and the layers of fat that may be in or on the muscles of your body to diminish. This will make you look more toned and give you a rock hard physique.

There are many examples of the types of exercises that you can perform to mimic a Strongman's athlete's workout. First, try the overhead Keg Toss.

Using a metal keg, grip it on either side and toss it backwards over your head. Perform this five times, with a one minute rest in between each toss.

If you have access to a semi-truck or industrial-sized tire, you can also do the tire flip workout. Lay it flat on its side, so that it is horizontal and steady on the ground.

Grip underneath while squatting down and tilt the tire upward. Flip it onto its other side.

Perform this five times, and then take a three to four minute rest. Repeat this process three times, allowing yourself the same break between each repetition.

With heavy weights held parallel in each hand at your side, do the zig zag farmer's walk. Your arms should be loose and hanging at your sides, and you will want to do three sets of fifty-yard walks, with a small thirty second to one minute rest in between.

The Backward Sled Drag is especially taxing on the leg and back muscles, so be careful that you are strong and capable enough to perform it. Attach the strongest weight you can handle onto a rope or cord, and drag it for forty to fifty yards.

You should do at least two sets of this exercise. By the time you have performed these movements, you should definitely be feeling the burn.

If you have experienced any difficulty, be sure to remember which moves were harder for you, and maybe try to ease up next time. It is essential for you to push yourself, but do not go overboard.

Strongman athletes do not usually get enough credit for their fitness and strength. However, you can try their form of work out and really appreciate how difficult this event is.
