subject: How To Paint Stucco [print this page]

Stucco is a textured home exterior that is common in Sandy Springs and Norcross, Georgia area homes. From time to time, the surface needs to be painted. This is the time to call reputable Sandy Springs or Norcross painting contractors to do the job. Homeowners attempting to complete the project themselves with little or no experience may find it a daunting task that does not turn out quite the way they expected. When done properly, a newly painted stucco surface gives the home a fresh, new look and protects it from the weather.

Material

Most stucco is made of a mixture of Portland cement, sand and water. Once it dries, its texture is uneven in a purposeful, decorative manner. It is hard, but can be broken or shipped with the use of force. Without a stable base beneath it, stucco can crack. Care must be taken during painting to avoid damaging the surface. If it has crevices and cracks, these should be repaired or touched up before painting. Caulk or special patching material should be used to close any openings and smooth over any gaps that would allow moisture, insects or small animals inside.

Preparation

Before a Norcross or Sandy Springs painting company begins painting, they should first clean the surface. The best method to use is power washing. This will remove any dirt, dust or debris from the stucco. Care should be taken to use a water pressure stream that will not damage the home's exterior. All outside features that will not be painted should be covered over with either plastic or a tarpaulin. This will prevent overspray, smudges, splatters and dripping on doors, windows, shingles, drainpipes, bushes and outdoor lighting fixtures.

Colors

Stucco is now available in a variety of colors that can be mixed in upon application. The color may fade in the Georgia sun over several years, or the residents may tire of the color. When the homeowner decides they would like a change, or the house appears worn and tired-looking, it is time to choose a new color. Paint is available in a wide array of colors that can closely match the existing hue or give is a completely different look.

Paint

Once the proper color and type of paint has been chosen, an additive will be mixed in to the paint used for the first coat. This will create superior adhesion and flex in the paint to prevent chipping, peeling and cracking for approximately 10 years. The second coat of paint will not need the additive, and can be put on after the first coat dries. This will help the home look fresh and new, as well as protect it from the weather.
