subject: Pixies : The Story Of The Pixies Begin And Does Not Finish Yet [print this page] Pixies are an American alternative rock band formed in 1986 in Boston, Massachusetts. The group was separated in January 1993 under conditions somewhat stormy, but sest reformed in April 2004. From the outset, it consists of 4 members: Black Francis (born Charles Thompson IV, and with today artist name Frank Black) (vocals and rhythm guitar), Joey Santiago (lead guitar), Kim Deal ( bass and vocals) and David Lovering (drums). The group has met with only modest success in its country of origin, but was much better received in Europe, but only if their albums reach the general public.
Pixies music draws its influences including punk rock and surf music of the 1960s, and is characterized by its melodic richness, its particular dynamics (quiet verses and choruses furious). The songs were written almost entirely by Black Francis, singer and guitarist. His lyrics are deliberately obscure, often surreal , and cover topics as diverse and obscure that ufology, mental illness, physical injuries and linceste with numerous biblical references .
The group is widely regarded as one of the spearheads The explosion of alternative rock of the early 1990s, even though it will be separated before davoir benefited fully from this pioneer status. Their influence has grown considerably after their separation .This cult artist status is probably no stranger to the success of Nirvana, Kurt Cobain, whose leader has repeatedly and publicly acknowledged that his group had a lot to the Pixies .
The story of the Pixies began in 1984 with the meeting of Joey Santiago and Black Francis (born Charles Michael Kitteridge Thompson IV ) while they were still a student in economics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst . It so happened that the two future friends share the same residence hall. Their common passion for music they had bound him fast friendship. Joey was a fan of punk rock in the 1970s and Bowie, while Francis rather appreciated artists of the 1960s, such as the Beatles and Donovan. So Joey, who undertook to introduce Francis to punk rock.
The pair recorded some demos with two guitars, no objective or project . In September 1985, Francis left for a year in Puerto Rico, as part of a university exchange. He found himself in a dormitory compound half Puerto Rican young gay very extroverted . Homesickness and its difficulty to master the Spanish had he returned to Boston after six months, in March 1986. There, he managed to convince Joey to leave school and start a band of rock. The two friends then spent their time to compose, while eking out a living working a stevedore on the docks of the city . In June 1986, they decided to place an ad in a local newspaper, the Boston Phoenix in order to recruit a bassist knowing and loving harmony singing Peter, Paul & Mary and Husker Du.
Kim Deal, a young lab assistant just married and just arrived in Boston was the only person to respond to the announcement . Francis and Santiago knew early on that it was they needed, despite the fact that Kim has never touched the low of his life .The group then began to rehearse with a drum machine, but the need was felt for a drummer. First it was Kelley Deal, Kim's twin sister, who was approached. Francis and Kim shared the price of the ticket to bring her to Ohio. Kelley successfully passed the audition, but refused to join the group by declaring that it was not interested and left the next day . Kim then remembered David Lovering, crossed at her wedding reception and an old acquaintance of her husband .
David not only accepted, but he suggested the group rehearse in the garage of his parents, whom he still lived . Had to find a name for the newly formed group. Joey, who often resort to the dictionary (English not being his native language) stumbled on this funny little word for mischievous elves . After considering names like Pixies in Panoply and Things on Fire, the name was finally adopted by Pixies . Under this name they gave their first concert at the Rathskeller in Boston in September 1986.
