subject: Swimming Lessons And Health Benefits [print this page]

Swimming is a great way to keep yourself in shape. Fitness magazines and other health media are always speaking of lifting weights and going for a run. Are you tired of running? How many workouts have resulted in aches and pains shooting through your body? Do not let the trends of modern society block your vision of a better way to maintaining your health. Swimming! Perhaps when you think of swimming, you begin to flashback to the days of your childhood when your mom would drag you to the local middle school pool and have you take swimming lessons. Sound familiar? Is swimming right for you? Let us take a look.

Other workouts such as running can be very high impact. What this means is that your body virtually receives a beating with each exercise session. The weight of your body comes slamming down on your knees, ankles, and feet with every stride. Uneven surfaces can cause these impacts to be even more substantial. Many people of a more advanced age find that they can no longer support such high impact activities. High impact workouts can also cause you more pain down the road in your life with joint pain. Avoid this impact on your body by swimming. Your body weight is neutralized by being in water. Even if you do not want to give up other forms of exercise, at least use swimming to shake things up or to warm-up.

Swimming builds strength and cardiovascular endurance. When you lift weights you are placing resistance on specific muscle groups. The problem that many weight lifters have is that they lift against certain muscles more than others and sometimes they even neglect other muscle groups entirely. This causes imbalance in the body. Swimming is also a resistance workout. With each stroke in the water, your arms are pushing against the water. With each kick your legs are pushing against the water. This resistance builds strength in your muscles. The greatest advantage with swimming is that the resistance is distributed to almost every muscle group in your body. By swimming you are gaining a total body workout. It also consumes a lot of energy and effort. This causes your heart rate to stay in the target zone during the length of your swim. This increases lung capacity, muscle endurance and heart strength. If you have kids, enroll them in swimming lessons too! Find swim classes online. If you live in Atlanta, Georgia, do an online search for "swimming lessons in Atlanta". The results will provide the nearest classes in your area.
