If you think that avocados can only be experience in its dip form or guacamole, it means that you still have many things to learn and understand about an avocado. The reality is that avocados can also be enjoyed in salads with mayonnaise or even just by itself.

So what really is an avocado? Can it only be used as an ingredient in a vegetable salad or can it also be used in preparing a fruit salad? However, before we go into the details, we ought to first identify if it is a fruit or a vegetable. Only after answering that basic question can we dare to know more about avocado and its applications

Avocado has other common names such as butter or alligator pear. The name "butter pear" is derived from the avocado's yellow with touch of green meat that has a creamy butter texture. In terms of visual appearance, it is similar to a big berry that is normally shaped like a pear. However, do note that some varieties of avocados are round.

In the scientific scene, an avocado is a fruit. However, mainly because of the unique taste and its application in salads, it is being considered to be a vegetable by the local society.

Some varieties of avocado are as follows: (1) Hass, which is the most popular type of avocado. This is attributed to it being available all throughout the year. On the other hand, (2) Pinkerton is a type of avocado that is only presented from winter through spring. This avocado type has a green, pebbly skin which when ripe turns to dark. As for (3) Reed, it thrives during the summer up to the first part of fall and unlike Pinkerton, it has a fruit skin that stays green even when it is already ripe. In addition, avocado types also include (4) Fuerte, (5) Gwen, (6) Zutano and (7) Bacon.
