Self defense classes are a great way to improve your chances of surviving an attack by persons hostile to your health and well-being. Many people fear being attacked by known or unknown assailants. Theyve watched the evening news and seen the reports of attacks on elderly and other persons. They themselves may have suffered a previous attack or known someone who has. The world has unfortunately become a more dangerous place in which to live despite our advances in the field of science and technology.

So, how do we balance the odds in our favor? Preparation is a great way to increase the odds of succeeding in any challenge. Self defense classes prepare individuals to survive attacks which may otherwise kill or seriously hurt them. A good self defense class will teach alertness and awareness as well as the portrayal of confidence which has often proven a deterrent to attackers seeking an easy victim.

Good self defense classes are not just about countering an attack. They are also about avoiding attacks. Self defense classes teach techniques which transform potential victims from soft and easy targets to difficult and hard targets. Simple techniques such as avoiding dark and lonely places, walking assertively and using your voice to prevent an attack are important strategies for frustrating would be attackers and prevent an attack.

The average person may have seen at least one movie scene in which self defense is used to prevent an attack or to reduce the attacker to a pulp. Self defense classes removes these scenes from the small or big screen and make them more realistic by providing opportunities to learn and practise these moves. Persons may assume that they are able to handle these attacks with the cursory knowledge they may have picked up from others. Good self defense classes dispel these myths by demonstrating the psychological, physical and technical aspects of good self defense.

It cant be overemphasized that practising good self defense requires a psychological mindset geared for survival. This is called the warrior mindset. The warrior mindset means that you are determined to survive an attack even if it means killing or seriously injuring your attacker. The warrior mindset ensures that you will utilize what you have learnt in self defense classes in the event of an attack and not just participate in an academic exercise.

Self defense classes will also make you better able to physically defend yourself. You will increase your levels of fitness and learn new self defense techniques which you can use to protect yourself. Practising with other members of your class will also give you an opportunity to build up your confidence levels as you prove to yourself that the self defense techniques work.

Whilst you can learn self defense from a book, video or some other material, taking self defense classes are really the best way to learn how to defend yourself. You will benefit from direct hands-on training, the presence of other individuals to encourage you and an expert teacher. Nothing beats that.
