subject: The Long Road To A Lady's Success [print this page] A lady doctor achieved her golden career by passing a roundabout route, following her purpose firmly even if she did take time out for some quirks in life. But as a high school student, she was never single minded. Then, studying at a local high school, this lady's mind was divided between medicine and linguistics as possible career paths. She took in all she could as she hedged her bets from Spanish, French and English to all the sciences. Though she was excellent in languages, she still looked on to the wisdom of her Spanish teacher in deciding. The teacher responded by saying that while she can be a doctor who happens to be a language expert, she cannot be a physician on the side.
Enrolling in the local college as she made her choice meant that all the A-level subjects she took were strictly science studies. She kept her ground even when the results after two years were not that encouraging. Her favorite subject matter was Chemistry and this was the only area she passed.
She managed to join the University through the Natural Sciences door but she aimed to shift to medicine right way after completing her first year. She could not transfer for she did not perform so well but then she admits to having a good time. She got more B's than A's. She adamantly vowed to complete this degree thanks to her growing love for chemistry as well as this reason.
With her growing fondness toward chemistry, she decided to major in it along with food technology. She reaped her honors degree from this field. She could not get a job after graduating. After leaving the university, she found herself unemployed. Jobs seemed to be out of existence. In her struggle, she went to the food industry. Discouragement made her ask why she ever got herself into this.
The sole person that was able to offer her a decent job was a drug dealer who discovered her skills in using industrial kettles so he offered her a job. She described that she was indeed offered so much but then she made it clear that she was taught by her parents that money is not all and she did not even get tempted by the offer. She kept sending applications to medical school while never letting go of her dreams to become a doctor. She agreed to a teaching job with a heavy heart that still hopes to hear from medical school soon.
She needed money if she gets accepted in medical school so she decided to stop teaching and worked in the bank as trainee manager a year later. She would remain a mere employee if she decides to stay with the bank this was the consensus as she spoke to different people for advice and also weighed out the pros and cons on her own. She saw that only medicine could offer her the chance of having a business of her own while doing what she loves.
Two years later, she finally joined medical school. Fun and learning dominated year one as it traditionally does. She threw herself into it. She was not a bookworm, but studied enough and partied enough. She bagged honors in community health and was among the top 10 percent in Physiology in her first year. She loved the fact that community medicine helped her link with many people. Upon entering the homes, your patients' lives unfold before your eyes. Exceptional was what she used to define the program.
She avers that while cutting up cadavers can be revolting for her, it wouldn't trigger any emotional losses inside her. As she takes Pathology, a different story takes place. When they were required to autopsy newly dead people, she would cry for over 10 weeks. With their demise she felt an emotional loss. Pharmacology she loved, perhaps because of her background in chemistry. She was fascinated by how chemicals interact with others in the body and how they worked to cure diseases. She would go to the library and read journals, an activity quite unusual for her. All she knew and knew her were shocked as she took home an award in Pharmacology.
She shied away from being a bookworm and gained the reputation of a party organizer along with five other study mates. They all performed so well in the finals and three even came home with awards. A handful of honors including a medal in gynecology was reaped by one of the members in her group. Now, we can confidently say that we never wasted our time.
