subject: Discover 3 Golf Swing Instruction Drills That Will Improve & Simplify Your Golf Swing [print this page]

Bad golf swing instruction is one of the major contributers to why lots of people struggle with their golf swings. There's so many numerous opinions and swing systems on the market today that for the average golfer it's really hard to know what is the best advice to take.

How many times have you been watching the latest infomercial on this brand new golf swing system that is guaranteed to make you hit the golf ball long and far off the tee and straight and accurate with the irons guaranteed to turn the average 90 shooter into a low 70's shooter over night?

Well, I know I've fallen for all this and believe me nothing has done it for me other than going back to the basic fundamentals and practice, practice, practice!

In this article I would like to simply give you 3 golf swing instruction drills that if you spend a little time on you will start hitting the golf ball much more solid in return improving your ball striking and overall game. I'm not going to promise you that this will happen overnight but if you spend a little time on the range implementing these 3 drills you will improve and get a whole lot better.

Golf Swing Instruction Drill No. 1 - Split Grip Drill

One of the major issues for a lot of golfers is not getting proper wrist action in the golf swing. Not having the proper release of the golf club at impact could cause several issues.

a) Slice b) Snap hook

The split grip drill will help you get the proper wrist action and proper release of the club head at impact. Here's how it works:

On the driving range hit at least 20 range balls with your hands split apart. There's nothing to this drill. Simply split your hands apart from your normal grip and hit the ball. You will feel how the hands are supposed to react at the impact with the golf ball.

Again, hit about 20 balls this way and then go back to your normal grip and try and hit about 10 balls and see if this has improved your impact with the ball. I think you will notice quite a change in how solid you will make contact with the golf ball creating a much straighter more accurate shot.

Golf Swing Instruction Tip No. 2 - Keep Your Head Still Drill

A lot of golfers suffer from hitting the golf ball with a slice, pull or even blade a lot of shots because they don't keep their head down through out the golf swing. Here's a drill that will help:

Again, at the range take a certain number of balls (20 for example) and do nothing but concentrate on keeping your head still through out the back swing and impact with the golf ball. While performing this drill be sure to keep the head still through out the swing and don't worry just yet where the golf ball goes after impact.

Focus, focus, focus on keeping the head still. If you can get yourself to the point of watching the club hit the ball at impact you will with out a doubt make much more solid contact in result hitting straighter more accurate shots.

Golf Swing Instruction Tip No. 3 - Alignment Drill

My last and final tip to help you make much more solid contact with the golf ball and start hitting straighter more accurate golf shots is working on your alignment on the range.

You could be having trouble hitting the golf ball to far left or right not because of your swing but because of where you are aimed. Here's how this drill works:

Choose a target where you would like to hit the golf ball. Simply take a club out of your bag and lay it down pointing slightly left of your target (for left handers slightly right). Get into your normal stance and start hitting balls with your feet lined up with the club. You will be able to see how your alignment looks and I think you will be shocked at how unaligned you will be. This is a great drill to use before each and every round because it will get your eyes focused on the right path when you get out on the course.

In Closing:

In order to improve your golf swing and start hitting much more solid accurate shots you need to focus on spending some time on the range practicing the right fundamentals. You simply don't need a lot of golf swing instruction that is geared towards hype and confusion. The game of golf is really a simple game that we average golfers seem to make harder than we should. If you can simply concentrate your efforts on the 3 golf swing instruction drills listed above I think you will start seeing great improvement in your overall game!
